The company's new CEO, Louis Camilleri, unveiled a new business plan Tuesday that includes reviving iconic models and embedding them with Formula One technology. Significantly expanding Ferrari's electric-gasoline hybrid powertrain offering and affirming plans to introduce a utility vehicle that hews to the brand's performance levels, Camilleri laid out his ambitions for a company he took over only in July following the death of long-time CEO and chairman Sergio Marchionne. Orthodox envoys meet with Ukraine's president

Sep 18, 2018

KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine's president has met with two envoys dispatched by the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians to prepare for establishing a Ukrainian church that is ecclesiastically independent from the Russian Orthodox Church. The prospect of an autocephalous church in Ukraine has deeply angered the Russian church, which last week gave a sharp spiritual rebuff to Ecumenical Patriarch Batholomew I and questioned his status as "first among equals." Archbishop Daniel of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA said in the Monday meeting with President Petro Poroshenko that "we have come to Ukraine this time ... to...

Sep 18, 2018

VILNIUS, Lithuania — Animal rights activists have staged a demonstration in front of Lithuania's parliament to demand a ban on using wild animals in circuses after the reported death of a 6-month-old bear cub. The demonstrators carried a tiny coffin during a symbolic funeral on Sunday for the cub. Lithuanian news media have reported the bear died in captivity at a local circus during the summer. Several dozen participants brought teddy bears to the rally. Activist Agne Klevinyte says Lithuania should stop the "exploitation" of bears, tigers and other animals in circus shows where "wild animals do not belong." More...

Pope pays tribute in Sicily to priest slain by Mafia

Sep 18, 2018

PALERMO, Sicily — Pope Francis appealed to Mafiosi to renounce their quests for power and money as he visited Sicily on Saturday to honor a priest slain by mob henchmen for trying to protect youths from the evil clutches of organized crime. The daylong trip by Francis to the Mediterranean island where the Cosa Nostra is rooted marked the 25th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Giuseppe "Pino" Puglisi's assassination. Puglisi was declared a martyr by the Vatican and beatified in 2013, the last formal step before possible sainthood. Francis paid tribute to the priest, who worked to keep...

Pope says populism should serve people, not stir up quarrels

Sep 18, 2018

PALERMO, Sicily — Pope Francis is recommending a Christian kind of populism after being attacked by Italian politicians for defending migrants. Francis told a crowd of 100,000 at an outdoor Mass on Saturday that "the only possible populism" is a Christian one that "listens to and serves the people without shouting, accusing, stirring up quarrels." The pope spoke in Palermo, the capital of Sicily. Many of the hundreds of thousands of migrants rescued at sea in recent years were taken to the Italian island's ports. Francis has staunchly championed the rights of migrants. Italy's new populist government is discouraging their...
