Calgary, Canada, October 8, 2026 /NewsNetwork/ -- Healthflow Naturopathic has released a new guide on microbiome testing for gut health in Calgary, featuring insights from Dr. Derek Cook, ND. The guide details how GI-MAP (Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus) testing fits into a root-cause approach to digestive health and addresses common questions about pricing and the testing process for those considering this assessment.

Digestive health concerns are widespread in Canada. According to the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation, IBS affects an estimated 18% of Canadians, giving Canada one of the highest rates in the world. A 2023 study published in Neurogastroenterology & Motility using data from the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study found that 41.3% of Canadians met diagnostic criteria for at least one chronic disorder of gut-brain interaction. The prevalence and complexity of these conditions can make comprehensive gut health assessments valuable when symptoms persist.
Microbiome testing provides insight into microorganisms present in the gastrointestinal tract. Healthflow Naturopathic explains that the GI-MAP stool test uses quantitative PCR to detect and measure microbes and biomarkers, allowing practitioners to integrate these results with symptoms, medical history, nutrition, and lifestyle when developing a care plan.
According to the guide, microbiome testing in Calgary typically costs between $600 and $900, often with a naturopathic consultation included in the total fee. Dr. Derek Cook, ND, notes that the final price varies depending on the clinic, the specific panel chosen, any additional markers, and the number of follow-up appointments required. Patients are advised to confirm what is covered in quoted fees before booking.
The process begins with a consultation to determine which tests are appropriate, followed by at-home stool sample collection using a provided kit. The sample is mailed to the laboratory for analysis, with results typically released to the practitioner within five to ten business days after the lab receives the sample. A follow-up appointment is then scheduled to review the findings and discuss next steps.
The guide also covers insurance considerations. Dr. Cook explains that laboratory fees are typically paid directly by patients, while naturopathic consultations may be covered by extended health plans. Because coverage varies by plan, patients are encouraged to review their benefits before proceeding with testing.
Additionally, the guide addresses retesting, noting that repeat results can be compared over time to track changes when follow-up testing is appropriate.
