Everyone Has a Good Side opens with its narrator, Oscar Gamble, evicted from his Boston apartment and arriving in New York City with nothing but a 300-page manuscript he's convinced will make him famous. What follows is a deepening psychosis--number obsessions, coded messages, and a conviction that the CIA is closing in--that ends with Oscar stripped naked on a Manhattan street corner and involuntarily committed. Inside the psychiatric unit, Oscar meets Gilda, and the novel shifts from a story of psychological collapse to one about what it costs to hold yourself together for someone else.
The novel refuses simple answers about mental illness. Rather than treating psychosis as a plot device to be resolved, Savage renders it from the inside--the private logic of delusion, the exhausting vigilance of paranoia, and the dignity patients try to preserve within a system designed primarily to contain them. The relationship between Oscar and Gilda becomes the book's emotional core: two people who recognize something true in each other precisely because the rest of the world has stopped looking closely. The title becomes the book's central question: what happens when the "good" in a person isn't enough to save the one they love, and when restraint can wound as deeply as its absence?
Benton Savage writes fiction, memoir, and poetry shaped by lived experience with mental illness, upheaval, and the long work of self-understanding. He is the author of the memoir Wrong Side Out: Madness Misdiagnosed, which chronicles his own years navigating undiagnosed bipolar disorder, as well as the coming-of-age novel Free and Satisfied and the poetry collection Fortune Cookies: 100 Sayings to Help You Navigate Life's Challenges, which reached #1 in new poetry on Amazon.
