Explora Books announces the release of both volumes of S. Naomi Main’s memoir series, ‘An American Girl Book 1: The Letters Between Us’ and ‘An American Girl Book 2: The Letters He Never Sent.’
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, October 29, 2026 -- Together, the two books trace a single, decades-long love story, the kind that, in another era, could only be built one stamped envelope at a time.
An American Girl Book 1: The Letters Between Us opens in November 1968, when Mark Main, recently out of boot camp, walks into the Westminster, Maryland diner where young Sharon Sholl works and asks if she will write to him while he is away at war. Their relationship develops amid Sharon’s engagement to another man, who is later killed in combat; Mark’s letters from Vietnam, full of longing and uncertainty; and a correspondence that somehow survives it all, carrying the two of them to the altar on April 13, 1972. The book follows the couple beyond their wedding and into their early married life to the edge of the 1990s, showing how the relationship forged through their correspondence evolves alongside the demands of ordinary life.
An American Girl Book 2: The Letters He Never Sent continues the story through the challenges of the couple’s later married life and the family they built nonetheless—nieces, informally adopted children, and young people who found a second home at the Mains’ Turkeyfoot Road homestead—and through Mark’s diagnosis with colon cancer. Main describes a period of relative calm before the disease returned and spread, followed by his death in 2019 at age seventy. The final chapters address grief alongside Sharon’s reflections on faith and life after Mark’s passing.
Throughout the series, Main examines her mistakes, fears, and immaturity alongside the experiences that shaped her relationship with Mark. She notes that some names and identifying details throughout both books have been changed to protect the privacy of those involved, while the events remain drawn from her own life.
S. Naomi Main is a retired public school employee. She lives with her cocker spaniel, Ellie, and black cat, Ned Pike, in the home she and Mark moved into in 1979.
An American Girl Book 1: The Letters Between Us and An American Girl Book 2: The Letters He Never Sent are now available in paperback and hardcover through Amazon and other major online bookstores.

In her New York solo exhibition at 47 Canal, Hong Kong-raised artist Cici Wu animates the gallery space with 11 paper lanterns made using traditional techniques. Inside the lanterns constructed with bamboo and willow sticks and sheathed in mulberry paper, she has placed pulsating LED lights that cast moving shadows. There is something cinematic about these luminous sculptures that are traditionally vessels of memories and loss. The pulsating light in each lantern corresponds to a section of the...

“We’re in the golden age of Canadian wines,” legendary wine writer Tony Aspler tells me confidently. We are at an intimate showcase of the stuff at the Canadian consulate in Hong Kong’s Quarry Bay neighbourhood, where representatives of nine wineries have gathered to prove that the true north has more than ice wine to offer. As a wine drinker with no particular bias – I will happily quaff a funky Austrian pét-nat (sparkling wine) as much as a fine Burgundy – it was natural for me to enter with...
