FQHC RCM KPIs read against private-practice benchmarks mislead health center CFOs. New Visualutions guidance names the five metrics — and the three comparisons that actually hold up for community health finance.

Spring, United States, September 11, 2026 /NewsNetwork/ -- Federally Qualified Health Center finance leaders reviewing revenue cycle performance against private-practice benchmarks are reaching misleading conclusions, according to new guidance from Visualutions, the Greater Houston healthcare technology and revenue cycle firm serving community health centers since 2001. The guidance identifies five KPIs that tell a health center CFO whether the revenue cycle is genuinely working. The full breakdown is available at https://www.visualutions.com/blog/fqhc-rcm-kpis/
The five metrics are days in accounts receivable, clean claim rate, net collection rate, denial rate, and cost to collect. Together they cover coding, submission, adjudication, and collection. The guidance stresses that they must be read together rather than in isolation: days in AR falling while net collection rate also falls means claims are being written off faster, not collected faster.
The central argument is that standard ambulatory benchmarks do not transfer to community health. A health center bills a Prospective Payment System encounter rate rather than a fee-for-service schedule, reconciles wraparound payments that arrive on the state's timeline, and serves a sliding-scale population. Applying a family-practice AR target to that structure, the guidance notes, produces false alarms and false comfort in roughly equal measure.
Rather than chasing published numeric targets that often cannot be traced to any standards body, the resource recommends three comparisons that hold up: the health center measured against its own four-to-eight-quarter trend line, consistent metric definitions across every report, and peer health centers of similar size and region. It also flags a widely circulated 95 percent clean-claim-rate figure as tracing to vendor publications rather than to a recognized benchmark authority.
Specialized revenue cycle expertise built for community health is where those numbers translate into recovered revenue. Details on the firm's revenue cycle work are at https://www.visualutions.com/revenue-cycle-services/fqhc-revenue-cycle-management/
The guidance closes on execution: a scorecard earns its keep only when a number moves and someone knows what it means and acts before the quarter turns over. For community health centers, where every recovered dollar funds care for a patient who might otherwise go without, the firm frames disciplined measurement as inseparable from the mission.
