Functional Medicine for Thyroid: When Labs Read Normal but Symptoms Persist

Sep 10, 2026

Functional medicine for thyroid symptoms follows the full hormone conversion sequence, not just TSH and total T4. Functional Medicine of Houston explains why a report marked as normal can still miss where the problem sits.

Boerne, United States, September 10, 2026 /NewsNetwork/ -- HOUSTON, Texas. September 10, 2026. Functional Medicine of Houston has published a new report for patients who have been told their thyroid is fine while their symptoms have not changed. The piece argues that a standard two-marker thyroid panel answers a narrower question than most patients assume, and that the part of the process where the problem usually sits is not measured at all.

The report is available at https://functionalmedicineofhouston.com/functional-medicine-for-thyroid/

A routine workup generally measures thyroid-stimulating hormone, or TSH, and sometimes total T4. TSH describes the signal the brain sends to the gland. Total T4 describes the storage form of the hormone. Neither number follows what happens to that hormone afterward, and the active form the cells use is free T3, which the body has to produce through a sequence of conversions.

"Just because you have a symptom or even a diagnosis doesn't mean that's where the cause of the symptom is coming from," said Dr. Bobbie Stowe, DC, founder and clinical director of Functional Medicine of Houston.

The report also takes apart what the word normal means on a laboratory report. Reference ranges are statistical. A laboratory builds them from the results of the population it has already tested, sets the boundaries a fixed distance from the average, and flags only the most extreme few percent of results. A value can therefore sit close to the edge of a range, far from the middle, and still print without a high or low marker beside it.

Two markers absent from most standard orders carry particular weight in the report. The first is free T3 itself, the form that enters a cell and puts it to work. The second is reverse T3, an inactive form produced when T4 is routed down a different enzymatic path. Reverse T3 rises during illness and under sustained stress, and it rises at the expense of the active hormone. It is rarely part of a routine panel, which means that when it is elevated, no one in the process knows.

The report identifies stress and digestion as the two factors that most often interrupt hormone conversion, and neither appears on a thyroid panel. The conversion depends on enzymes built with selenium, and the hormones themselves are built around iodine. Both nutrients have to be absorbed before they can be used, which ties thyroid function to stomach function. Patients told separately that their thyroid is fine and that they are anemic have frequently been handed two halves of one sequence.

Dr. Stowe has practiced for more than 15 years and works with patients across Texas on a 100 percent telemedicine basis. The practice runs an eight-marker thyroid panel covering TSH, total T4, free T4, total T3, free T3, and reverse T3, with thyroid antibody markers added when a patient's history calls for them. Adrenal, micronutrient, and gastrointestinal panels are ordered when the intake history points that direction rather than applied to every patient.

The report closes on the point Dr. Stowe returns to with thyroid patients: a normal report and a body that does not feel normal are not a contradiction, but the predictable result of measuring two points in a process that has several.

Functional Medicine of Houston expects to publish further reports in the series, including pieces on Hashimoto's and on the role of gut health in chronic symptoms.

Eh, could Canada be the next big wine country? Find out at Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival

“We’re in the golden age of Canadian wines,” legendary wine writer Tony Aspler tells me confidently. We are at an intimate showcase of the stuff at the Canadian consulate in Hong Kong’s Quarry Bay neighbourhood, where representatives of nine wineries have gathered to prove that the true north has more than ice wine to offer. As a wine drinker with no particular bias – I will happily quaff a funky Austrian pét-nat (sparkling wine) as much as a fine Burgundy – it was natural for me to enter with...

The City Beyond the Skyline: Getting to Know the Real Doha

There is a particular moment in Doha, just before sunset, when the city seems to change pace. Along the Corniche, locals and visitors gather for an evening stroll as traditional wooden dhows drift across the bay. Across the water, the towers of West Bay catch the last of the afternoon light. Nearby, the narrow streets of Souq Waqif begin to fill with families, friends and visitors settling in for the evening.
