Hong Kong AI International Film Festival opens 2027 entries with seven redesigned awards

Sep 29, 2026

The competition drops a fixed AI-use threshold and creates separate recognition for creative methods, digital characters and worldbuilding.

Hong Kong, September 29, 2026 -- The Hong Kong AI International Film Festival opened submissions for its 2027 edition Thursday, replacing a fixed artificial intelligence usage threshold with an assessment of substantive creative contribution and introducing seven redesigned awards.

Entries close March 1, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. Hong Kong time. Individuals, teams, studios and educational institutions may apply. The fee is $99 per work, with no additional application charge for applicable awards or associated creative achievements.

The seven awards replace the inaugural edition's 19 honors.

The changes shift attention from how much AI a production uses to what its creators accomplish with it. They also offer filmmakers working across languages, production traditions and business environments a more specific way to describe their work to an international jury.

From percentages to creative decisions

The inaugural 2026 edition used a 51% framework. The 2027 rules do not prescribe an AI-use percentage. Instead, AI must contribute substantively to principal audiovisual material, performance, narrative organization, generative rules or audience experience. Subtitling, denoising, upscaling or administrative assistance alone does not establish eligibility.

Applicants must provide a complete, assessable work and explain significant human decisions. A trailer, pitch or collection of impressive fragments cannot substitute for the finished submission.

The Golden Unicorn Grand Prix is the highest overall honor, recognizing expressive achievement, emotional and intellectual power, and the relationship between form and content. Fixed films, interactive works and generative experiences are eligible without a hierarchy favoring newer technology.

For filmmakers in France or Germany, that means an authorial perspective can be evaluated through the completed film rather than its technological novelty. Commercial scalability, sequel potential and real-time responsiveness are not prerequisites. The same protection applies to filmmakers anywhere whose work calls for a conventional viewing experience.

Recognition beyond the finished film

Three Silver Unicorn awards recognize Creative Method, Digital Character and Worldbuilding. They are not second-place film prizes. Each achievement must be demonstrated in an eligible submitted work, but that work need not first reach the main competition shortlist.

The method award examines how creators define problems, choose and revise outputs, maintain control and substantiate repeatable results. Tool expense, automation rates and elaborate workflow diagrams are not achievements by themselves.

For a production team in the United States or Canada, the rules allow confidential methods to be assessed without requiring publication of source code. Restricted demonstrations or appropriately redacted evidence may support review. This accommodates proprietary work while preserving the requirement to verify central claims.

Digital Character evaluates identity, behavior, emotion and continuity across situations. For animators in Japan or South Korea, a relevant opportunity is to show how design, performance, voice and generation control produce a coherent character, without first establishing a licensing business or building a conversational agent.

Worldbuilding concerns rules, relationships, culture and causality realized in a work, not simply attractive backgrounds. A compact setting rooted in a Brazilian or Mexican community could demonstrate more coherence than an expansive fictional universe. The rules do not require a game engine, a large map or a lengthy world bible.

These are possible applications of the rules, not announced entries or national partnerships. Their common value is specificity: creators can identify an achievement without presenting their production as superior in every respect.

Different audiences, equal demands on the work

The remaining awards recognize Narrative Innovation, Audiovisual Innovation and Experiential Innovation. They examine how works organize meaning, develop an audiovisual language or create a consequential relationship with audiences.

An interactive project from a museum-based team in the United Arab Emirates, for example, could be assessed through audience choices and their consequences rather than hardware expenditure. Dynamic submissions require runnable versions, defined experience boundaries and opportunities for independent exploration and repeat testing.

For multilingual teams in India, Indonesia or the Philippines, the competition accepts original-language works with adequate English subtitles, transcripts or equivalent support. Previously released films may enter: there is no premiere requirement or universal minimum runtime. Submitted versions must have been completed on or after Aug. 1, 2026.

For filmmakers in Kenya or South Africa, those conditions also permit locally specific language and cultural references to remain central. The opportunity is not a promise of preferential treatment, but a framework in which context can be explained and assessed without treating unfamiliarity as an artistic deficiency.

Building on 2026, with distinct measures of progress

The inaugural festival ran July 17–23, 2026. During that edition, the organizing association jointly published an AI film industry white paper with IFAIFPA and IAISA and announced A-Class accreditation under IFAIFPA's AI festival framework. IFAIFPA is separate from FIAPF, the organization associated with accreditation of traditional film festivals.

The organizer's 2026 impact report recorded 1,140 media and distribution records spanning 56 countries and territories as of Aug. 15. That footprint includes international newswire distribution endpoints; it does not represent 1,140 independently reported stories or the national origins of submitted films.

In an Aug. 11 announcement, the organizer said the first group of Hong Kong AI Film Market partners had completed transactions involving 101 AI-native and related audiovisual titles, totaling more than $12 million. The announcement supplied aggregate figures rather than individual contracts, counterparties or title prices. The total should not be read as festival revenue or a forecast for entrants.

The festival's wider network includes INDEX records for films, workflows, characters and worlds, alongside market services, hackathons and creator development. INDEX operates through the IXF standard maintained by IAISA. Its purpose is to organize discoverable information and versions, not establish legal ownership.

For an international producer, clearer records could make the initial evaluation of a potential collaborator easier. Licensing still requires separate agreement on rights, territories, media, languages and terms. Festival recognition does not resolve every jurisdiction's copyright questions or guarantee distribution.

Another change concerns credits. One person may hold several roles, and multiple collaborators may share a role. Applicants need not have a company or a conventional crew. That matters across borders because a collaborator's contribution can be described directly, whether it involves selecting performances, controlling visual continuity, designing a world or revising a generative process.

Neither entry nor an award transfers existing rights. A creator can seek recognition without accepting an unspecified distribution arrangement. That separation gives emerging teams and established producers a clearer basis for deciding which later services meet their long-term professional development needs.

Keeping evaluation separate from commerce

The 2027 rules separate necessary assessment permission from public screening, publicity, public indexing and commercial cooperation. Buying INDEX services is not required for entry. Declining optional promotional or market arrangements does not affect professional evaluation.

Works and creative achievements have separate jury panels. Jurors must review complete submissions, disclose relevant conflicts and support decisions with reasons. Awards may remain vacant. The Grand Prix requires at least five qualified, conflict-free jurors and support from two-thirds; other awards require at least three jurors and a majority.

For Hong Kong, the proposed international role extends beyond hosting an awards event. It involves helping different creative practices become understandable across borders while keeping artistic recognition, documentation and commercial negotiation distinct.

Applications must be completed through hkaiiff.io; Festival dates, venues and award resources will be announced separately.

Why do some celebrity perfumes – think Ariana Grande, Britney Spears – stay popular?

There is a particular kind of deja vu that comes from a stranger’s perfume, when a scent – sugary-sweet in a lift, soft and creamy on a person’s jumper, flowery from a hug – drifts past and you know it long before you can name it. Chances are, a few of them come with a celebrity’s name. Famous names have long sold perfumes, intentionally or not. When Marilyn Monroe said in 1952 that Chanel No 5 was all she wore to bed, she did more for that bottle than any advertisement could, despite never...

We recently hosted visitors from Malaysia at our place in the Czech Republic, happily guiding them around Prague and several places beyond the capital, including a few that were new to us, too. There was much conviviality as the six of us explored beautiful Czech cities and towns, sampled hearty local cuisine and slipped effortlessly into the distinctive Malaysian-Singaporean patois – a lively hybrid of English, Chinese, Malay and some Indian vocabulary and syntax – that comes naturally to many...
